New Members and Membership Changes
I find myself writing this presidents letter on the night of Christmas day, the 25th of December 2010. It’s about 11:30 PM and I have had a fantastic day filled with the company of my family. I am reminded of the importance of this group of people and I find myself so very thankful for all that I have in my life. What better day than today to find the inspiration to write my president’s letter for 2011.
I’ll be the first to admit that my family has had its fair share of problems in times passed. What family doesn’t? We have not always gotten along, we have argued and we have stepped on each other’s toes. But despite difficult times, we have still managed to support each other through the years.
I am clearly reminded this holiday of the importance of family but when looking even deeper than that, I am reminded of the importance of relationships beyond family. As with anything, nothing truly worthwhile comes easily. We know this. After all, we are photographers and like any other family, it takes all of us to make it work.
I am a firm believer that what I give, I also receive. The ASMPCV has been my professional family. In the organization I find camaraderie, friendship, shared ideas, opinions, wisdom, and counsel. The gift of my time has been worth every sacrifice and I feel truly blessed to be a part of it.
Our organization is committed to helping you understand new developments in technology and business practices and our local chapter has planned programs that will bring that information to life.
It’s a new year - a chance to create new possibilities for our future. There is a lot to be excited about in 2011. The economy is clearly coming back, which is bringing new business opportunities to us all. Within the local organization, there are three new positions opening on the board, which brings opportunity for new members to lead.
We want your ideas and participation, so at our Annual Member Meeting on January 12 we are having an open discussion. Come share your perspective with the ASMPCV board and get your ideas on the table. This is your ASMP. Let’s join together and really make this a great year for our chapter!
So what do we have planned? First, we have simplified our program schedule this year to include six meetings/programs, one every other month, beginning with our Annual Member meeting on January 12th at Scott Brown’s new studio. We are also introducing an additional feature to our member meetings that should be fun and will allow members to share their work. We’re calling it “4 x 15”. At each member meeting (not programs), four ASMPCV members will have 15 minutes each to show and talk about whatever work they’d like. It can be their commercial work, their personal work, one photo or a picture story. Following “4 x 15” we’ll have our annual meeting and we want your feedback on how we can all improve the chapter.
Our other 5 programs will be a mix of member meetings, including “4 x 15” and programs designed to keep our membership informed about the changing landscape of the photography business.
Finally, I’d like to invite you to run for the board of directors. As I mentioned earlier, we have 3 board positions opening up and as anyone who has served on the board will tell you, you will get far more out of it than you put into it. If you are interested in running for the board, a call for nominations will be emailed to you in January. But there’s no need to wait for the email, just send a message to info@asmpcv.com and let us know you would like to run.
Christopher Winton-Stahle ASMPCV President
Roberto Westbrook is now a part of Wonderful Machine. They recently showed his book at Ogilvy & Mather.
In December, Roberto was in New York having prints made for a group show at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia when he ran into Elliott Erwitt, his favorite photographer. A blog entry about the encounter is here: http://robertowestbrook.com/blog/2010/12/how-i-almost-met-elliott-erwitt/
Christopher Winton-Stahle worked on an extended project shooting new marketing material for Marriott Hotels this fall and had the opportunity to do a little traveling around Virginia. He also worked on a television commercial for RoomStore World and handled the still photography and creative imaging work for the spot. The commercial may be seen at http://tinyurl.com/2d9wuhr.
John Lee Matney and curator Paul Thomas opened Linda Matney Fine Art Gallery in Williamsburg Va with their first official show of contemporary art on October 2nd. See www.lindamatneygallery.com.
The gallery's 15 foot ceilings make it suitable for installations that require a high ceiling.
See Newport News Daily Press coverage of the opening: http://www.dailypress.com/entertainment/galleriesandmuseums/dp-feat-matneypromo-pictures,0,3874062.photogallery
John Lee Matney and Susan Dickey, lead teacher in English at Achievable Dream in Newport News, were married in July.
Elli Morris has temporarily become a carpenter, painter, electrician’s assistant, sculptor and wood refinisher – all the name of fixing up her funky 1906 warehouse studio. “Bring a CD, Leave with a Photo Party” to follow. Stay tuned.
Chip Mitchell won the Hasselblad/ASMP Mid-Atlantic Photo Contest for June 2010 themed “Water.” He won the H4-D40 (40-megapixel MFDB) for a month; see the “Water” entries here: http://gallery.me.com/hasselbladusa#100017.

Chris Crumley won the Hasselblad H4-D40 for the July 2010 “Sun” themed contest and took it to Paris for a month. See the Sun themed entries here: http://gallery.me.com/hasselbladusa#100019
The August contest was themed “Flower” and is currently being judged at Hasselblad USA Headquarters in Redmond, WA. See the “Flower” entries here: http://gallery.me.com/hasselbladusa#100026
At the completion of the contest series, the Chapter with the most wins gets to keep the H4-D40. ASMPCV currently leads the competition.
Chris Crumley’s client, a military prime vendor, won two contracts totaling nearly $100 million with his photography of a new military clothing system. Chris is now an advocate of billing clients usage based
on a percentage of sales.
Allen Jones recently completed shooting for a time lapse / motion piece. The project documents the
restoration of a man made lake to its natural state as a wetland for the VCU Rice Center on the James River. The piece will be used for educational and fund
raising initiatives.
Mark Atkinson was named editor of a high end local magazine for Tidewater, “Distinction". Three issues have been produced in 2010.
Matt Eich was named in PDN’s 30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch. See the story and gallery: http://www.pdngallery.com/gallery/pdns30/2010/
Matt’s work also appeared in the burn. Journal curated by Magnum photographer, David Alan Harvey. See: http://www.burnmagazine.org/essays/2010/06/matt-eich-carry-me-ohio/
Chip Mitchell completed a print ad in October and shot stills for a TV spot for Dominion Power and Project Healing Waters.
In December, Chip shot two ads for Dominion Power that involved creating a rain/sleet storm and, ironically, simulating a snow storm the day before a snow storm hit the area.
Christopher Winton-Stahle was included in an article in Shutterbug magazine that featured photographers in the U.S. that create imagery for the music industry. The article includes three of his images and an interview. See the article at: http://tinyurl.com/27jqc58.
Casey Templeton had a 2-page story “Boxed Up” done in the June issue of PDN about his promo boxes. Then, there were a ton of response pieces from all over the place (AdWeek, APPhotoEditor, British Journal of Photography, Art Directors and others). Open Google and search for “pdn casey templeton boxed up” and you’ll see what Casey was thinking…. In as well as outside the box.
Roberto Westerbrook was in Haiti in October to do pro-bono work for Physicians for Peace. The photos are being used online and in print in their December Giving Catalog: http://robertowestbrook.com/blog/tag/tear-sheet/
Roberto's ongoing photos for Cox Communications are being used in print mailers and a billboard off I-264 in
Norfolk.

Keith Lanpher recently wrapped a series of print and motion projects for Virginia Tourism http://vimeo.com/15434639. He is currently in preproduction on spot packages for a Health Care facility in South Carolina, and a Virgina bank. All of which get in the way of the personal work he has planned.

Alan Koral, New York Attorney was interviewed by PDN. PDN asked, “Is it a mistake to think of interns as free labor?” Koral responded, “Yes, it is.” If you disagree, you may save yourself some future grief by reading this: http://tinyurl.com/3ao9noq
