President's Letter: The Future is Bright
By Christopher Winton-Stahle, President, ASMPCV

“When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” - Alexander Graham Bell
I am so optimistic about the future of our industry. Yes, this may be a bold statement. I will be the first to admit that. However, I am continuously excited about all of the changes that are occurring within our industry.
“The only constant thing is change” - Francois de La Rochefouchauld
I believe it is a good time to be a visual communicator. Opportunity is everywhere and I see examples of how people are finding their way in a crazy business environment by advancing the business model or embracing new technologies.
Technology continues to create more possibilities within our medium. Knowledge and education are more readily available than ever. The possibility of refining our “niche” and reaching out into the world from smaller markets is more attainable. Andrew Carnegie once said, “Anything in life worth having is worth working for.”. It will be work to find your niche but “necessity is the mother of invention” (Plato).
Inspiration
Our next speaker has done just that. On May 11, we will have Chris Clor, international working photographer / photo-illustrator as our speaker. Chris Clor has a very energetic and illustrative style that incorporates traditional photography, creative imaging techniques and CGI. Chris will be talking about his evolution as a commercial artist, the effect of the economic meltdown on his business, how that pushed him to evolve his process, and how he finds ways to remain viable. For more info: http://www.asmpcv.com/articles/evening-chris-clor.html
Camaraderie
This year we are uniting members together in a new way with our “4x15” Member’s meetings, an opportunity for 4 of our chapter members to speak about a body of their work for 15 minutes. We have had two of these meetings so far and it has been a great joy to see the fantastic work our members are creating. It has also really given us the opportunity to get to know each other a little better as commercial artists.
Education
In March we co-sponsored a roundtable discussion with the Virginia Production Alliance, which was all about the realities of a convergence between still photography and video production. In the interest of making the information openly available, we made the program free to members of both the ASMP and the VPA. We also have an audio recording of the program available onlin. You can listen or download it at www.asmpcv.com
Business Practices
On June 23 we will have Lou Lesko, fashion photographer & commercial TV director, hosting a program titled “Estimating and Producing Advertising Photography”. In this program Lou will guide us through the ABC’s of estimating and producing high-end advertising shoots. Read more about Lou’s program at http://www.asmpcv.com/articles/estimating-and-producing-advertising-photography.html
Finally, if you are interested in seeing videos of some of subjects covered at the 2011 SB3 conferences, ASMP national has made this information available at http://www.asmp.org/strictlybusiness/2009/03/welcome
We look forward to seeing you soon…
